Partap World School Pathankot Shines at District Chess Championship | 39 Students Participate
July 28, 2026Education goes beyond textbooks and classrooms when students get the opportunity to experience real-world learning. In an enriching experiential learning initiative, Class XI and XII students of Partap World School (PWS), Pathankot, studying Psychology, visited Vidya Sagar Mental Hospital, Amritsar, accompanied by members of the school’s Counselling Cell.
The educational visit provided students with valuable exposure to the practical aspects of Psychology, mental health, psychological disorders and patient care. It helped them connect concepts studied in the classroom with real-life situations while developing a deeper understanding of human behaviour and emotional well-being.
During the visit, students observed how patients are cared for in a professional mental healthcare environment. They gained an understanding of various psychological symptoms and disorders and were introduced to the different therapeutic and supportive approaches used in mental healthcare.
The students also had a brief opportunity to interact with a few patients who were able to share their names and basic details. The interaction was conducted with appropriate sensitivity, maintaining professional boundaries, safety precautions and respect for the privacy and dignity of the patients.
Learning Psychology Beyond the Classroom
The visit offered students an important perspective on the practical relevance of Psychology. Rather than viewing psychological disorders only as concepts discussed in textbooks, students were encouraged to understand the individuals behind those conditions—their experiences, behaviour, challenges and need for compassionate care.

The experience highlighted several important values that are essential for students pursuing Psychology, including empathy, patience, careful observation, responsible communication, professional boundaries and respect for human dignity.
For the students, the visit was also an opportunity to understand that mental healthcare requires more than identifying symptoms. It involves creating an environment where individuals are treated with patience, understanding and humanity.
Role of the PWS Counselling Cell
The visit was also aligned with the broader efforts of the Counselling Cell at Partap World School, which focuses on supporting students’ emotional well-being, developing self-awareness and helping students make informed academic and career choices.

By facilitating experiential learning opportunities such as hospital visits, the Counselling Cell helps students gain a practical understanding of subjects and professions connected with Psychology, counselling, mental health and behavioural sciences.
Such exposure can be particularly valuable for students considering future careers in Psychology, counselling, clinical psychology, psychiatry, social work and other allied fields.
Experiential Learning at Partap World School
At PWS, learning is viewed as a process that extends beyond conventional classroom teaching. Academic knowledge becomes more meaningful when students are encouraged to observe, explore, question and learn from real-world experiences.

The visit to Vidya Sagar Mental Hospital was one such meaningful learning experience. It reminded students that Psychology is ultimately about understanding people—not just studying theories, symptoms or disorders.
The experience encouraged students to look at mental health through a lens of empathy and dignity while gaining valuable insight into the responsibilities associated with working in the mental healthcare sector.

Some lessons cannot be fully taught inside a classroom—they have to be experienced. For the Psychology students of Partap World School, this visit was one such lesson, leaving them with greater awareness of mental health, human behaviour, compassionate care and the practical application of Psychology.
